Just back in the mid-January, myMYM.com reported that StarCraft II's beta was close and that fans could expect the beta release in the first quarter of 2009.
At the end of January, during the ESL event "EPS Alpen" in Vienne, Austria, it was Blizzard that was once again around the corner to present its upcoming RTS title StarCraft II. There, it became obvious that Blizzard has set an internal and still secretial release date for the first StarCraft II beta which will be playable for people that hold beta keys which were distributed in various Blizzard events (i.e. Blizzcon) and at the moment also in different Blizzard contests.
Ten days ago new breathtaking screenshots were presented and now Activision-Blizzard's Chief Operations Officers United State- Paul Sams confirmed, according to Golem.de, that the first StarCraft II beta will be published "in the months ahead". At the same time, a beta version of Battle.net 2.0 should go online.
He adds that "the beta will be played on a basic version of our new Battle.net architecture, which will give us the opportunity to test the game and the service in a live environment. Over time, we'll be adding features to deliver a second-generation Battle.net experience."
Sams also revealed the company's general business strategy for 2009, which includes the production of new game titles such as the action shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Prototype, Singularity, as well as a new Wolfenstein-Shooter. All those games should be available for PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. For the end of 2009 the company plans further Guitar Hero add-ons and also a totally new version of the game.
Furthermore, the COO presented a couple of statistics. During the 4th quarter of 2008 the company had a volume of sales of 1,64 billion USD - more than three times when compared to the same period of 2007 - while the profit for the whole year of 2008 grew to 3 billion USD. For the first time in history the company also lost 200,000 USD.
