nVidia CEO sees the MacBook Air as the future of laptop design

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has seen the future, and it is... Apple's present. He believes that in a few years you'll have trouble finding a computer that doesn't look like today's MacBook Air.

At the risk of offending the power users out there who can't imagine using such a "weak" machine as the Air, let me respond to Huang's words with a resounding "Duh." I fully expect Apple to move the rest of the MacBook line towards the Air: lighter, thinner, and with SSDs, because...well, what else would they do? Thicker, heavier, and with the same drives that we had in 2008? Of course they're going to move in that direction.

The article over at Cnet talks about Huang's "vision" being based on ARM chips, which Nvidia supplies, and believes that we'll see Windows running on ARM in 2014, but even that misses the point. After the announcement that Apple had been developing Mac OS X for Intel processors for years before the public switch to Intel, who would be surprised to learn in 2014 that Apple had also been developing Mac OS X for ARM?

Prognostication about the future is easy and cheap, anyone can do it and even if you're wrong, it's unlikely that anyone will call you on it. Saying that laptops are going to get thinner, smaller, and lighter is about as risky as saying that gravity will continue effect objects located on the surface of the earth. The only company that is delivering that "future" of computers is Apple, who has actually, you know, shipped something rather than speculating publicly about the future.

Do I expect the new MacBook Pros to look more like the MacBook Airs? Sure. There are questions in the details, of course, such as "Will there still be a SuperDrive or will the Pro line come with a standard hard drive plus a solid-state drive?" But unlike Windows on ARM, you should expect to see "the future" from Apple in a month or less.

Oh, and if you're wondering if Apple agrees with the idea that the MacBook Air is the future, no tea leaves are required; just checkout the title of the MacBook Air's web page: "The next generation of MacBooks." Otherwise, just ask anyone who has used one. One of my favorite recent quotes came from Peter Cohen who said that after using a MacBook Air for a few days: "other MacBooks seem almost Steampunky retro with their quaint hard drives."

I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple announce that the SuperDrive, which has previously been limited to the Mac mini and the Air (a restriction which has always seemed arbitrary and pointless) is now available for any new Mac, but the MacBook Pros will no longer ship with an optical drive. It'll remind me of when Apple killed off the floppy disk before everyone was "ready" for it and despite the fact that some people claimed they couldn't possibly live without it.

All of which is to say that laptop design isn't "going to change," it has changed. Mac users are living in the future of PC users. But don't worry; by the time they catch up, Apple will have found another way to move ahead.

Intel's ultra low voltage Sandy Bridge CPUs bound for MacBook Air?

The MacBook Air, while extremely popular, is one of the last lines of Apple computers not yet sporting a low power consumption Sandy Bridge processor by Intel -- the line is still running on the Core 2 Duo CPU, and while that's certainly a fast model, it's not quite the latest and greatest out there. But don't worry -- Intel has announced that it will be bringing out a new Sandy Bridge processor sometime very soon, and that's the same one expected to go into the new MacBook Air models by the end of the summer.

The best of these models, says Hardmac, is the Core i7 2657M, sporting dual cores running at 1.6 GHz and a turbo mode up to 2.7 GHz, lining up the MacBook Air with the low-end MacBook Pro. That's one spicy meatball! Of course, none of this is confirmed until we actually see the hardware in action, but if you want a faster MBA and can wait until June, you might want to see what Apple and Intel have in store for the next generation of the extremely thin little powerhouse computer.

Intel distributing Thunderbolt developer kits this quarter, more peripherals on the way

According to IDG News, Intel announced yesterday that Thunderbolt developer kits would be making their way out to manufacturers within this quarter, opening up development for the fledgling standard. The technology, previously known by its code name 'Light Peak,' began shipping on the 2011 MacBook Pro line, replacing the mini DisplayPort socket of the previous iteration.

The fully backwards compatible specification, which was announced on the 24th of February this year, encompasses both DisplayPort and PCI Express in a dual-channel, high-speed interconnect. Promising speeds of up to 10Gbps along copper cables, there's a lot of potential for products that require high-speed connections but a minimum amount of cables.

Companies including Canon, Matrox, AJA, LaCie and Western Digital have shown off products already, but none have made it to market as yet. Intel is hoping that by distributing developer kits, they can get a plethora of Thunderbolt-connected products hitting the shelves quickly, not just external hard drives, which is great news for MacBook Pro users.

The holy grail of the one connector to rule them all maybe a little ways off just yet, but with a bit of luck we'll start to see some decent uses for Thunderbolt, short of the standard DisplayPort connection, in the very near future.

Apple switches from Toshiba to speedier Samsung SSDs for new MacBook Air shipments

Anandtech notices that Apple’s newer MacBook Air shipments appear to contain Samsung-built SSDs versus Toshiba ones that originally shipped in the MacBook Air. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when Apple made this change but it’s worth noting that our MacBook Air from late 2010 carries a Toshiba SSD and the one we purchased about a month ago carries a Samsung SSD. Additionally, iFixit’s teardown from 2010 features the Toshiba drive.

The Samsung SSD carries a model number of SM128C while the Toshiba drive is labeled as TS128C. To the consumer, a change in manufacter and model number may not mean much, but that’s not the full story in this situation. According to tests (chart below) the Samsung SSD is signifnacantly faster than the Toshiba version. Anandtech summarizes this chart:

The interesting aspect is that the SM128C models provide quite a nice performance bump in at least one performance metric. Benchmarks posted by users show that the SM128C manages up to 260MB/s read and 210MB/s write speeds. In our tests (and corroborating what users have reported), the TS128C only offers speeds of up to 210MB/s read and 185MB/s write. The SM128C also supports Native Command Queuing (NCQ) while the TS128C does not. The performance figures match the figures of Samsung 470 Series pretty well, which Samsung quotes as providing up to 250MB/s read and 220MB/s write. The Samsung 470 Series uses Samsung’s own controller with model number S3C29MAX01-Y340.

iMac supplies tighten ahead of forthcoming refresh

A good indication that an Apple product refresh is coming soon is when the respective product’s supplies begin tightening up. Most recently, this process happened with the iPad prior to the iPad 2 launch and with the MacBook Pro prior to the MacBook Pro refresh with Thunderbolt and quad-core processors. Now, it’s the iMac’s turn for a refresh. We have been told by three people familiar with the matter – all in different countries including the U.S. and an Asian country – that iMac supplies are tightening.

First, we have our friend Mr. X who provided us with the above screen shot and the following information. Mr. X says supplies for the iMac have tightened significantly, and this has never happened during the current model’s life-cycle. The data chart above shows that all four iMac models are “constrained” with no ETA for new shipments in a particular region; a very large one.

Tipsters in the United States have informed us that their iMac shipments are also very constrained. That’s not the full story though. Although actual iMac shipments are lacking, our U.S. tipsters report that actual iMac components are also very constrained. The most constrained pieces right now are the current iMac’s graphics processors and hard drives. A lack of replacement components is also a good indication of an upcoming refresh.

Next, our source in a major Asian country reports that the 21.5 inch iMacs are very constrained, more so the 3.06 GHz base model, and the other three models are very close to the constrained state. So, when are the new iMacs coming? Previous reports claim that new iMacs with faster, Sandy Bridge processing chips and Thunderbolt I/O ports are launching between late April and early May… bring them on! Thanks, Robert!

Update: Readers are asking about Mac minis and white MacBooks. Although those products are approaching the end of their life cycles, there are plenty of them still around.

Refresh seems imminent Smile

Warning : do not buy iMac now

Prototype next-gen Mac Pro detailed: redesigned, rackable, stackable

Typically, when Apple sets out to develop new products, they build a few prototypes to choose from for the shipping product. This is evident most recently through a report that claims Apple is currently toying with three different iPhone 5 prototypes. Apple also does this with its Mac hardware.

Looking at the Pro Mac design evolution, it is interesting to note that the Mac Pro’s current design first hit the market in the form of the Power Mac G5 in mid-2003. Nearly eight years after the Mac Pro’s current design debuted, Apple is toying with a re-designed version of the product. The new design is said to be narrower at just over 5-inches and a few inches shorter at around 19-inches.  One of the reasons that Apple might be making this particular Mac Pro prototype smaller is because it is able to fit on to a standard server rack.

This possible new design could alleviate some of the system administrator distress caused by Apple’s discontinuation of the Xserve. The new machine is said to carry “stacked” drives with two drives per sled which will allow a higher drive density than what’s already out there.  These stacks are not only built for conventional hard drives, but faster, more reliable SSDs in different configurations. The width of this system configuration is said to be 3U (U = 1.75 inches).

Beyond what we’ve heard, it would seem appropriate that these new Mac Pros would also have a Thunderbolt port and perhaps even BluRay options for the Final Cut Professionals.

With the new version of Final Cut Pro coming in June, we can’t think of a better time for Apple to update the 8-year old design of the Mac Pro (and the iMac!).
