Apple Takes On Nokia, Microsoft, RIM Over Nano-SIM Standards

To help make future iPhones smaller, Apple is fighting to have its way on what the next-generation SIM cards will look like.

In the European tussel over the nano-SIM, Apple is fighting against competitor (and Microsoft lackey) Nokia over the standards. Just like on the micro-SIM that powers the iPhone 4S and new iPad, Apple wants a drawer to protect the nano-SIM.

But Nokia isn’t pleased, saying its design has technical advantages. RIM is also favoring Nokia’s proposal.

There is also fear over patents. While the standard would be available for use by manufacturers to license, some believe that Apple may eventually own the patents contained in its proposal, which might spark yet another patent war. (As if we don’t have enough.)

The European standards body ETSI is set to vote on the proposal next week. And just to make sure Apple gets its way, the company is applying to become the largest voting member of the body, overtaking (you guessed it) Nokia.

Apple’s push for its design of the nano-SIM is consistent with the company’s desire to shrink the design of future iPhones. News leaked late last month that Apple was looking to do away with the ubiquitous 30-pin dock connector to help save space inside the new iPhone for other more important components. Some of the desire to change the connector size is that with the introduction of iCloud, Wi-Fi sync and AirPlay, users don’t use the connector as often.

So, are you ready to swap your micro-SIM for a nano version?

Apple CEO Tim Cook seen touring Beijing Apple Store, posing with iFans (Update: Had ‘great meeting with Chinese officials’)

China’s Twitter, Sina Weibo, is filling up with pictures of Tim Cook visiting the Beijing Apple Store this morning.

It is not clear if this is his first trip to China as CEO, but Cook has been to China many times in the past as COO and was last seen negotiating China Mobile’s contract in mid-June at the behest of former CEO Steve Jobs who, according to his biography, never visited the country.

Cook, in response to the New York Times’ iEconomy stories, told Apple employees in a company-wide email that Apple cared about “every worker in its supply chain.” There is no shortage of happenings in China currently that could be bringing Cook over, including the Proview ‘iPad’ name fight, strikes at Foxconn’s new iPhone plant, and negotiations with the biggest carrier in the world China Mobile. Sina.com suggests it is the carriers who he’s in town for.

Update: the WSJ reports that Tim Cook was in town to meet government officials.

Cook, who is on his first trip to China since becoming chief executive of the Cupertino, Calif.-based company, “had great meetings with Chinese officials today. China is very important to us and we look forward to even greater investment and growth here,” said spokeswoman Carolyn Wu. She declined to identify any of the Chinese officials or give further details on the meetings.

Photos: Apple CEO Tim Cook tours Foxconn plant during his trip to China

Apple CEO Tim Cook has been in China the past few days meeting with senior officials from both companies and the Chinese government. He has already been spotted at an Apple Store in China, and now Apple has confirmed that Cook went on a personal tour inside of a Foxconn plant. Cook reportedly visited a newly instated iPhone manufacturing section within Foxconn. Foxconn has been the source of many Apple product-production based controversies as of late, and Cook, notably, emailed his staff a lengthy response addressing concerns of worker safety and other topics. One more image (via iFeng) of Cook’s Foxconn visit is after the break.

RIM complains about Apple stacking vote for nano-SIM standard

Despite offering to license the nano-SIM standard royalty-free, Apple is getting flak from RIM for recruiting additional proxies in the voting process. Nokia had made similar complaints when Apple initially made the proposal to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute. Here’s what RIM had to say about Apple employees taking voting spots for SK Telekom, Bell Mobility, and KT.

We kindly ask that neither shall a person of one company who is appointed to carrythe votes of another company be entitled to cast a vote on behalf of that company, nor shall a personof one company who is registered in the place of a person from another company and appointed tocast a vote on behalf of that other company, be allowed to cast a vote on behalf of that company.
Considering most handset manufacturers are still wrestling with the switch to micro-SIMs, establishing the next subsciber identity module standard is a long ways off. We haven’t seen much in the way of alternatives, and until someone offers one, I’m having a hard time seeing Apple’s submission being rejected. Of course, that’s not to say that Apple’s tactics for pushing their version of the micro-SIM are entirely fair, but does it make a difference if everyone adopts it in the end anyway?
Reportedly, ETSI voting on the issue will be put on hold for at least another 30 days.

smaller things means either they can make smaller devices, or they can put other hardware in it.
intinya, better products. kembali ke kita aja untuk adaptasi. Smile

Apple to Announce 2Q 2012 Earnings on April 24

Apple today updated its investor relations page to note that it will announce its earnings for the second fiscal quarter (first calendar quarter) of 2012 on Tuesday, April 24.  The earnings release typically occurs just after 4:30 PM Eastern Time following the close of regular stock trading, and the conference call is scheduled to follow at 5:00 PM Eastern / 2:00 PM Pacific.

MacRumors will provide running coverage of the earnings release and conference call.

The release should provide some early sales numbers for the new iPad, which launched with just two weeks left in the quarter.  The company previously announced that the device sold three million units in its first four days of availability, and strong sales undoubtedly continued for the remainder of the quarter, boosted in part by a quick expansion into international markets with the device being available in over 30 countries by the end of the quarter.

Melbourne-Based Artists Looking To Create Apple Product Perfume For Special Event

Three Melbourne-based artists recently teamed up with Air Aroma (“a pioneering scent solutions company“), in an effort to create a fragrance based on the smell of new Apple products.

Everyone reading this will most likely be very familiar with this particular scent, which accompanies the unwrapping of any new Apple product. For a special event set to take place in Melbourne, three artists - Gavin Bell, Jarrah de Kuijer, and Simon McGlinn – are hoping to have this fragrance diffuse throughout the building. Not too long ago, they asked Air Aroma to develop the special perfume. The scent solutions company notes:

To replicate the smell a brand new unopened Apple was sent to our fragrance lab in France. From there, professional perfume makers used the scents they observed unboxing the new Apple computer to source fragrance samples. On completion the laptop was sent back to Australia, travelling nearly 50,000kms and returned to our clients together with scent of an Apple Macbook Pro.

The fragrance itself, sadly, isn’t going to be mass-produced – meaning you won’t be able to purchase a bottle for your significant other, next Valentine’s Day.

You can read about the process over at Air Aroma’s blog, and for more information on the three artists who requested the scent, check out their website.

Apple and Samsung CEOs to meet in court for patent dispute settlement talks within 90 days

According to a report from Foss Patents (and confirmed by Reuters), Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook and Samsung Chief Executive Officer Gee-Sung Choi will meet within the next 90 days for settlement talks over ongoing patent disputes. Judge Lucy Koh, who is presiding over the two cases in California, initiated the meeting after ordering the companies to submit their CEOs and legal counsels to an Alternative Dispute Resolution.

“As directed by the Court, Apple and Samsung are both willing to participate in a Magistrate Judge Settlement Conference with Judge Spero as mediator. At Apple, the chief executive officer and general counsel are the appropriate decision-makers, and they will represent Apple during the upcoming settlement discussions. At Samsung, the chief executive officer and general counsel are also the appropriate decision-makers, and they will represent Samsung during these settlement discussions.”

The report called the talks “semi-voluntary,” because the companies did not have to submit to the Alternative Dispute Resolution. However, as pointed out by Foss Patents, “if only one of them had made the CEO available, the other one would have appeared to be less than constructive.” Apple and Samsung executives will meet in San Francisco with U.S. Magistrate Judge Joseph C. Spero sometime over the next three months:

from the logo it looks like they're announcing retinas for the whole Apple industry. or at least the Macs since the latest iOS devices already have it.

if this is true, no doubt about new macbook pro, even if it is not announced on the 11th of June, there will be enough hint to tell that its actually coming out.. Smile
